(8 sep. 1925, Southsea, Hampshire, Inglaterra–24 jul. 1980, Londres).

Actor de cine británico. Hijo de artistas de vodevil, comenzó a actuar en su niñez en los números cómicos de sus padres. A comienzos de la década de 1950 actuó en radio en la popular serie cómica The Goon Show, y poco después inició su carrera cinematográfica. Sus actuaciones en Un golpe de gracia (1959), I'm All Right, Jack (1959), Lolita (1962) y Dr. Insólito (1964), en la que interpretó a tres personajes, obtuvieron una gran acogida. Se hizo enormemente popular como el torpe inspector Clouseau en la comedia La pantera rosa (1964) y sus continuaciones, y más tarde fue aclamado por su interpretación de un ingenuo jardinero en Bienvenido, Mr Chance (1979). Su amplio registro de personajes lo llevó al estrellato en una época en que predominaba un rígido estilo de casting, en el que se encasillaba a los actores en roles determinados.
